Event rules, regulations and eligibility
Healthy males and females of junior high school age or over, capable of completing the course. Elementary school children may participate if accompanied by an adult; all minors require the consent of a parent or guardian.
With regard to the Beginners' Short Course, those who can cooperate and cycle in a group at the same pace as the slowest rider.
Those with good manners who can strictly obey event rules and traffic regulations.
Those who consent to the participation regulations determined by the organizer.
Those who have taken out both bicycle liability and personal death & injury insurance policies.
Event rules and regulations
This event is not a race, but a cycling event aimed at conveying the attractions of the food and tourism of Hokkaido’s Minami Sorachi region, as well as improving cycling-related manners. Traffic along the set routes will not be regulated, basic traffic regulations – such as stopping at red lights and stop signs – must be strictly observed, and riding two abreast or cutting-in in front of other cyclists will not be tolerated.
The routes cross national highways in a number of places. Always beware of heavy vehicles and avoid taking risks or riding beyond your capability.
Do not ride at excessive speeds; in order to enjoy the Sorachi gourmet delights at the aid stations, please stop at the checkpoint of every aid station (not including sub- and privately established aid stations). The finishing times are limited to a certain period; riders finishing outside this period (either too early or too late) shall be considered disqualified and not be entitled to receive a completion certificate.
Riders who fail to reach the checkpoints before they close, or fail to reach the finish line within the time limit shall be considered disqualified.
Time limits are to be established at several locations along the route. Riders who are judged by officials to be disqualified for being over the time limit or any other reason (including those at locations other than checkpoints), shall be asked to stop riding, whereupon they will be picked up by the sag wagon.
The organizers reserve the right to publish images, photo articles and records of riders participating in the event, on TV, in newspapers and magazines, and via the Internet.
Participants’ bikes must be single-seat bicycles fitted with both front and rear brakes.
Fixed-gear track bikes and tandems are prohibited. However, single-gear bikes fitted with a free hub and front & rear brakes are permitted.
Mini velos (small-wheeled) and recumbent bicycles are permitted but please note that the route includes some steep inclines.
Shopping bikes (also known as “mama-chari”) are not prohibited but please consider the characteristics of the route before deciding whether or not to ride such a bike.
Aero bars (TT bars) are prohibited, but bar-ends fitted to flat handlebars are permitted.
All riders are required to wear a helmet and gloves.
If, for any reason, you retire midway through the event, please notify a member of staff and follow their instructions.
If an accident occurs between two or more participants or involves a vehicle belonging to a member of the public, please contact the event headquarters or a member of staff immediately, and await further instructions.
Entry fees cannot be refunded under any circumstances. Refunds cannot be made in the case of the event being cancelled, contents being changed, or in the case of the entrant not participating.
If the event cannot be held as scheduled due to particularly bad weather conditions or the like, the organizers reserve the right to change the event contents, or to cancel the event.
In the event of illness or injury during the event, the organizers shall carry out emergency procedures, the cost of which the participant shall bear subsequently. Please be sure to carry your heath insurance certificate/card at all times.
The course layout and routes may be changed according to road conditions at the time. Riders who do not abide by the above rules and regulations, or those who fail to adhere to warnings issued by event staff shall forfeit their right to participate in the event.
Those who retire along the way are asked to wait in a place where they can be easily seen by the driver of the sag wagon.
In the case of the event being cancelled, notification shall be made via the official event website and Facebook page by 4:00 a.m. on August 20 at the latest. Please refrain from inquiring by phone, as the lines may become overloaded.
Other points to keep in mind
Riders are responsible for the security of their own bike and personal belongings. The event organizers cannot be held responsible for any thefts, losses or breakages.
Sudden changes in weather conditions (rain, wind, fog, etc.) can be expected on the day of the event, and riders may feel cold due to the wind-chill factor when riding downhill. Please carry clothing such as arm warmers, leg warmers and a windbreaker to use in such conditions.
This is a long-distance cycling event; please consume sufficient amounts of food and water at appropriate intervals.
Please carry appropriate tools and equipment (allen key, spare tube, etc.) in case of punctures and mechanical trouble.
In case of emergencies, please register the mobile phone number of a member of your group with the headquarters, and input the headquarters phone number into your own phone, so that contact can be made with the headquarters.
